Hobbs Shiraz Gregor (Amarone) 2007

Shiraz Gregor Amarone Shiraz Best Red Wine Shiraz Australien

Wine Description

The Hobbs Shiraz Gregor is made from a parcel of our own Shiraz planted in 1988, where after hand picking the fruit is placed into trays and semi-dried. Then blending traditional drying methods with our own style we have made this full bodied Australian Amarone-style shiraz. Crafted in our unique rich, ripe full flavoured style. Approximately 2,200 litres made.

Wine Tasting Notes

This wine is made from Shiraz grapes that are hand picked and then placed onto drying racks. Over a period of time the drying process concentrates the berry flavours whilst maintaining their natural acids giving a unique flavour characteristic found only in this Amarone-style of wine.

The palate is a mouthful of concentrated ripe red cherries and plums showing layers of spice and pepper. The acids and tannins are finely balanced. Long, lingering and intense flavours.

Delicious!

Aged in new French oak for 24 months.

Wine Reviews

Hobbs Shiraz Gregor 2007

Rating 93 points

Rich and fleshy, with a sweet sensation to the ripe plum and currant fruit, mingling with cream and white chocolate on the long vivid finish. Made in the style of Amarone. Drink now through 2017.

Hobbs Gregor Shiraz 2006

Rated 94 points; Outstanding

Deep coloured, yet bright; a complex bouquet of black fruits, licorice, spice and cedary oak, then a very powerful palate enriched by 24 months in French oak. Against all odds carries its alcohol well.

Hobbs Shiraz Gregor 2005

Rating: 96 points

This wine was made from grapes dried on racks prior to crushing and fermenting in the style of Amarone. More deeply colored than it's siblings, it has a liqueur, port like character to its aromas and flavors. Large in scale and richly fruity, it conceals enough ripe tannin to evolve for 6-8 years. Drink this singular effort from 2015 to 2035.

Hobbs Shiraz Gregor 2004
Rating: 95 points

The 2004 Shiraz Gregor was sourced from a younger vineyard and includes some partially dried fruit in the style of Amarone. The wine spent 2 years in new French oak hogsheads. It is more deeply colored than its sibling and has a liqueur/port-like character to its aromas and flavors. Powerful, rich, and layered, but with less complexity, this lengthy wine can be enjoyed over the next 12-14 years.

Greg and Allison Hobbs vineyards are contiguous with Chris Ringlands Three Rivers vineyards; furthermore, Ringland is a consultant to winemaker Peter Schell. The Hobbs wines are made with minimal intervention and are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Hobbs Shiraz Gregor 2003
Rating: 96 points

Made from yields of two tons of fruit per acre, and aged two years in both new and old French oak, the 2003 Shiraz Gregor (from 16-year-old vines) possesses a roasted/scorched earth character as some of the fruit is dried a la Amarone. Rich and full-bodied, with a broodingly dense, concentrated style, an inky/blue/purple color, fabulous length as well as intensity, and riveting fruit, it can be enjoyed over the next 12-15 years.

Hobbs Shiraz Gregor 2002
Rating: 93 points

Made from younger vines (30 years), the 2002 Shiraz Gregor is more Amarone-like than the regular bottling, offering concentrated, intense notes of figs, blackberries, cherries, and currants along with an earthy, chocolatey character that is probably due to the fact that some of the grapes are semi-dried after harvest and before fermentation. After years in French oak, it is a big, full-throttle Shiraz that should age effortlessly for 10-15 years. Consumers should think of the Shiraz Gregor as an Amarone Shiraz from Australia.
